Steering Bar

Today I narrowed and sleeved a steering bar…

A bundle of four one metre lengths of seamless steel tube, 25mm ID and 3mm Wall, I used these on the big buggy to sleeve the steering bars, so I knew these would work well over a narrowed bar…

Two standard length steering bars…

Eventually removed the old track rod ends with the help of a blow torch, and then shortened them by the same 13″ as the narrowed axles…

I then found a length os suitably sized rod to go inside the hollow bar to improve rigidity some more, and provide something to weld to…

… in the joins…

Whilst shortening the lengths of seamless tube I cut one of the offcuts up the middle to make a good guide to keep the two halves of bar straight whilst I welded it up…

The seamless tube sleeve was then drilled for puddle welding to attach it to the bar inside, and was left a little bit short to allow the ends to be welded to the bar also…

All welded up, ground back, sanded, and new track rod ends fitted, and then temporarily attached to the steering arms…

Next job is ro replicate all this on the other front axle that is actually going to be the front axle LOL and then start on the chassis rails which are square box section for the other end of the radius arms to fit into, meaning the buggy will have a nice flat bottom… more on that soon! 🙂
