Narrowed Axles Part 4

So, on Sunday, (you may remember), I’d run out of welding gas…

So I combined my trip down the North Wales coast to collect a new bottle and to get a few things we were short of for the shop from Booker Cash & Carry… What’s that at the back?…

Ahhh, a bottle of Argon Mix shielding gas for my MIG.
On the way back..

I called in Halfords to get a roll of MIG wire, as that’ll be the next thing that goes?!… LOL

I started the day by walking the dogs and having a bacon butty, and then retreated into the garage…

I then set the MIG back up and welded the two gussets of box section on top of the axle…

And then drew around the two Rockwatt axle ball gussets…

And then ground everything back shiny for a good weld…

All welded up! One axle nearly ready for paint then?! 🙂

From the back (this is destined to become the rear axle)

I then hung the radius arms in to make sure they did not foul on my welds inside the radius arm mount where the axle has been narrowed and welded back up… All OK! 🙂

I then rotated the axle back in the rotisserie… this will be the view from behind… note how the JimnyBits shock absorber guards are at the same level as the bottom of the radius arms and the bottom of the diff… plenty of ground clearance… especially on 31″ tyres 😉

A few more photos 😉 All cleaned up with a sanding disk in the angle grinder, and a sanding pad by hand…

From the side…

Three-quarter view… (Can you tell I’m quite chuffed with it!) 🙂

Back to the mockup for another look…

With the completed one on the floor, the other – the front – can go on the bench…

I popped to the shop to get a pie and a Diet Coke just as Hermes delivered the other bar of studding for this axle…

And then I decided it was time to call it a day and head for the shower… 😉 Not worth starting it now, I’ve got a full day in the garage on Sunday, so might as well leave it ’til then…

I won’t blog the second axle, as it’s the same as the rear one… I’ll be back soon with them painted, reassembled, and ready to mockup for the positioning of the transfer box, etc…

More soon!! 😉
